When you take a mobility
scooter into unknown territory, there are two vital pieces of
information that you should have:
(1) The gradient of hills
- that's because scooters are guaranteed safe only up to certain
limits. Go up
a hill that's too steep and the motor will cut out; and
(2) The whereabouts of dropped kerbs
- otherwise you can get 'hung up' and trapped.
Unbelievably, there are
no records kept of either in this country. Not by Ordnance Survey,
not by County Councils' Highways Departments, not by anybody!
The difficulties I
encountered in my town are being experienced all over the UK. Take a
look at Accessible Swanage to see
how I managed to make things better locally, and use it as a
blueprint to improve your own town.
